Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 within Long Beach California. DuVernay had a close relationship with her aunt Denise and her mother, who pushed DuVernay to be creative and instilled by art. Her aunt worked the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could follow her passion for art literature and theater in the daytime. DuVernay liked the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay discovered that art can be a powerful tool to promote political activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who was moral compass and urged DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was still at college. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was asked to check the trash inside the home that belonged to a member of the jury. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks that she was assigned, the journalist was inspired to start a new career in publicity. DuVernay was brought in right after college, as a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. She was promoted to the position and set up her own firm of public relations known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also established a range of lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
